How to Make Black Male Hair Curly

Grow out your hair, then use chemicals to curl it.

Many black men have curly hair only immediately after it has been washed. As soon as the hair dries, the hair reverts to its natural kinky state. If you want to keep your curly look, you will have to chemically alter the hair's wave pattern. When properly maintained, your curly hair will last four to six weeks.

Things You'll Need

• Texturizing kit
• Narrow-tooth comb
• Neutralizing shampoo
• Moisturizer

Instructions

1. Buy a texturizing kit from a beauty supply store. Texturizing kits are also sold in most department stores and pharmacies. However, you will find a wider variety in a store that specializes in beauty products.

2. Prepare the texturizer. This is done by mixing the activator that came with the kit into the jar of texturizing creme. Depending on the brand of your texturizing kit, the creme may not require a liquid activator.

3. Place the texturizer onto your hair. Apply the texturizer generously to ensure that all of your hair is covered.

4. Use a narrow-tooth comb to gently comb the product through your hair. Be sure to comb in the direction of your hair's natural wave pattern.

5. Allow the texturizer to sit on your hair for the length of time specified by the kit's instructions. The coarser the hair, the longer the texturizer will have to remain.

6. Use lukewarm water to thoroughly rinse the texturizer from your hair.

7. Apply a neutralizing shampoo to neutralize the chemicals in your hair. Rinse the shampoo out of your hair. Repeat this step until all of the texturizer is removed.

   Some neutralizing shampoos are color-activated. Their lather will generally be pink as long as traces of neutralizer remain in your hair. The lather will turn completely white when all the neutralizer has been removed.

8. Apply a liberal amount of moisturizer or gel activator to your hair while it is wet. In most cases this moisturizer or activator comes with the texturizing kit.

9. Apply the moisturizer/activator daily to maintain your curly style.
