How to Ask for Free Vet Advice
When you have a pet or own livestock, your responsibilities include grooming, feeding and providing veterinary care to keep the animals healthy. But veterinary medicine and treatments can be expensive, and few options exist for veterinary insurance to cover the cost. If your pet needs treatment or you want veterinary guidance, you may be able to get free advice from a licensed vet.

1
Call local vets for advice and referrals. Speak with local veterinarians and ask if they can offer free advice when owners cannot afford to pay. If they say no, ask if they can recommend other providers who do this.
-
2
Contact an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals office in your area and ask to speak with a vet. The ASPCA offers many veterinarian services. The vet may give you advice by telephone or refer you to a free advisory vet service.

3
Search online for free vet advisory services. Visit the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine website (see Resources) to find several free vet services available both in your community and online.
-
4
Fill out the online forms and questionnaires on veterinary websites to receive free advice. Submit questions to a vet through an online advisory service such as those identified in the References. Enter your questions and contact information in the supplied search and question forms, and a vet usually replies in a time frame ranging from a few hours to a few days.

Tips & Warnings
Be as specific as you can about your animal's condition when you ask for advice so that the vet can work efficiently to resolve any problems.
If you think your animal is seriously ill, contact a local animal hospital for help right away. Using online advisory services may delay critical treatment.
