How to Remove Deep Scars

Remove scars to reveal smooth, undamaged skin.

Deep scars cannot be removed from the skin with any degree of ease. Over the counter remedies that may work on surface scarring are no help on deep scars, especially surgical scars, burn scars, or scars that are old, hard, and set. Don't lose hope if you have a deep scar you loathe, however; you can consult with a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon to see which scar removal options may help you. Scar treatments should not be performed until years after the scar has formed, because scars lighten and fade over time, which may reduce the need for surgical intervention.

Instructions

1. Get a steroid injection into the scar. This can be performed by a dermatologist, although the purpose of the steroid injection is actually to decrease any itching or pain, steroid shots often decrease the look of the scar and help it to fade.

2. Get cryotherapy performed on the scar. A dermatologist or plastic surgeon will use a solution to freeze the scar off of your body.

3. Arrange to undergo pressure therapy. A doctor can give you a garment you'll wear daily for 4 to 6 months that will compress the scar. This can lessen its appearance or even help it fade entirely.

4. Schedule a surgery consultation for skin grafts. A piece of healthy skin can be removed from another part of your body and grafted onto the scar. This covers the scar, but the grafting may result in new--although lesser--scars. Discussing expectations with your doctor can help you know if grafts will work for you.

5. Schedule an appointment for laser therapy. Laser therapy can change the color or appearance of a scar. It will take more than one treatment and may require other concurrent types of therapy. Used in conjunction with steroids or pressure therapy, laser treatment is even more effective.
