Bleaching
-
1
Bleach hair first if hair is dark or if a very light shade of blue is desired. Bleach can be purchased at most grocery stores, drug stores or beauty supply stores.
-
2
Depending on how dark your hair is, choose a bleach between 20 and 30 volume. Note that you should not use any metal containers or tools when working with bleach.
-
-
3
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly all along the hairline, including the back of the neck and ears, to protect your skin.
-
4
Apply bleach to hair starting at the bottom of the hair and working your way up, as roots bleach the fastest. Work in sections of hair, and pin hair up once it has been bleached, starting with the bottom sections and working towards the top.
-
5
Leave the bleach on the hair the desired amount of time to lighten the hair, typically between 10 and 20 minutes.
-
6
Rinse hair with warm water and shampoo. Do not condition because this will prevent the dye from sticking to hair.
Blue Dye
-
7
Decide on the shade of blue you would like to dye your hair. Blue hair dye can be purchased at most beauty supply stores or some drugstores or grocery stores.
-
8
Do a strand test on a few hairs that are not easily noticed, such as an underneath layer or the back of the head. Apply the dye to the hair and follow the timing instructions on the box. Rinse out and then examine the hair to see how light or dark the dye will make your hair. You may wish to experiment with leaving the dye on for longer or shorter times until you reach the color you desire.
-
9
Wash hair if you did not bleach and wash your hair. Towel dry hair until just slightly damp.
-
10
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly all along the hairline, including the back of the neck and ears, to protect your skin.
-
11
Place hair dye in a plastic bowl and begin applying to hair using a hair tint brush that should come with the hair dye. If no brush is supplied, a clean small or medium-sized paintbrush can work.
-
12
Start at the bottom of the neck and apply hair dye to hair in sections, pinning up hair as you complete each section. Make sure hair is completely saturated with the hair dye.
-
13
Begin combing hair once all the dye has been applied and you have removed the pins holding up the hair. Continue combing until the hair dye is completely worked through the hair. If the hair dye is a vegan hair dye, it will bubble, which indicates that it is absorbing into the hair.
-
14
Leave dye on for at least 15 minutes. If you experimented with the timing when performing the strand test, leave the dye on the hair for the amount of time that you found resulted in the best color.
-
15
Rinse hair with warm water once the desired hair color has been achieved. Shampoo and condition.
