How to Know If You Have Spyware

How to Know If You Have Spyware thumbnail
If your computer system runs slowly or acts strangely, you may have spyware.

Spyware includes computer tracking malware programs that, according to the Anti-Spyware Coalition, are "...deployed without appropriate user consent and/or implemented in ways that impair user control over...material changes that affect their user experience, privacy, or system security; use of their system resources, including what programs are installed on their computers; and/or collection, use and distribution of their personal or other sensitive information." In other words, spyware programs are secretly loaded onto your computer, through clicking links or downloading other types of software, and collect your personal information without your knowledge.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if your computer is running more slowly than usual. Spyware programs are often system resource hogs which run in the background, collecting your personal information and other types of data, and they can cause your computer to slow down or even crash when you try and open certain programs or run a number of programs simultaneously.

    • 2

Notice the frequency of pop-up ads. If you suddenly notice that you have an increased number of pop-up ads when you are browsing the Internet, receive pop-up ads when visiting websites that you have previously visited without ads or have pop-up ads appear when you are not browsing the web---these may be caused by spyware.

    • 3

Look at your browser toolbar. Some spyware programs will add components to your toolbar which cannot be removed or which reappear after removal.

    • 4

Look at your system and Internet settings. Some spyware will change which programs load when you start your computer or change your home page in your browser.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never download software or click links from sources you don't know.

  • Run a system check using your virus protection program regularly.
