How to Restore Grey Hair

How to Restore Grey Hair thumbnail
Graying hair is a natural part of the process of aging

On TV and the Internet there are hundreds of self-proclaimed remedies for hair care and hair coloring. While there are effective methods that exist, there is no scientific evidence that any diet, herb, supplement or product can reduce or reverse gray hair. It helps to understand why hair becomes gray in the first place. Hair color is produced by tiny hair pigment cells called melanocytes. As we age, the production of these melanocytes declines until they stop making pigment. Without pigment, the hair turns gray. Does this Spark an idea?

Everyone has a genetically determined point where their hair turns gray. Other factors, however, contribute to graying hair, and it can be of value to address these factors to take preventative measures. Thyroid disorders, Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia, vitilgo (a condition in which skin stops producing melanocytes), early menopause and smoking have all been linked with graying hair. Some of these can be changed with personal decisions which may help restore natural hair color.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), your diet can play a huge part in hair color. Food that is recommended by TCM includes Hijiki seaweed, blackstrap molasses, black sesame seeds, wheat grass, nettles and chlorophyll. Don't consume excess amounts of these foods, as they must be consumed in accordance with a normal, healthy diet. Excessive meat, dairy and salt are foods to be avoided.

Hair care products can be effective to some degree. There are many to sift through, but it is best to go with the product that has the most science and proven track record behind it. While this will not be outwardly obvious at the supermarket, prior research and reading the information on the bottle helps. Restoria, Capigirs, and Youthair are leading brands on the market.

Scientists believe they have recently made a major breakthrough in the gray-hair reversal process. Researchers have found that the pigment cells that produce hair color stay long after hair turns gray, they simply no longer function properly. Scientists at L'Oreal say it may be possible to reawaken these cells and spark the reversal. This product is not currently on the market but holds promise for the near future.
