Gather inspiration and ideas. Decide if you want the guitar to be a standard guitar paint job, such as one or two colors, or a customized guitar with personalized designs. Painting a guitar gives you the opportunity to customize your guitar and turn it into a piece of artwork as well as a guitar. An online search for hand-painted guitars turns up numerous examples and styles of guitar artwork.

Select a theme or a pattern for your guitar. Use the information gathered in Step 1 to create your own personalized design. The theme or pattern may be representative of the style of music that you play or it may be a reflection of your artistic taste. For example, skulls, flames and death images are popular with metal guitarists. Perhaps you are a Salvador Dali or Andy Warhol fan; in this case, you can use Dali or Warhol colors and images to create your own design.

Make several guitar templates. Purchase a couple of large white poster boards. Trace the shape of the guitar body onto the poster board. Cut the templates out with scissors. Do this a couple of times and you will have a couple of full-scale guitar templates.

Create your design on the guitar template. Use pencils and colored markers to sketch out the original design. When it comes time to actually paint the guitar, it is best to use acrylic spray paint for basic colors, and small paint brushes and paint markers for more intricate designs.

Complement the paint job with the guitar hardware. Keep in mind that pickguards and guitar knobs come in various colors, textures and shapes. Guitar pickups are also available in different colors. Incorporate these elements into the overall design.
