Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location in your yard that receives full sun for most of the day. Add in "plenty of compost and well rotted manure," suggests Gardening in Spain.

    • 2

Transfer the lemon seedling to your chosen location. The soil must be well-drained and moist. According to Purdue University "the lemon tree has the reputation of tolerating very infertile, very poor soil." The pH should level be 5.5 and 6.5. Perform a soil test to verify and add in enough lime to raise the acidity according to the results of the test.

    • 3

Plant lemon seedlings at the same depth they were in the nursery container. Leave 25 feet of spacing between trees if you are planting more than one lemon tree.

    • 4

Water slowly and deeply every other day for the first few weeks after planting and every seven to ten days afterward, recommends Texas A&M University Extension.

    • 5

Apply fertilizer during the first year with a cup of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) divided into three or four applications advises Texas A&M University. Spread the fertilizer in a circle around the tree and water well. Each year add another cup dividing it into three or four applications.
