How to Build an Ice Fishing Rod
Even when their favorite lakes and ponds are under a few inches of ice, the fish are still there, ready to be caught. One of the essential tools used in ice fishing is the ice fishing rod. An ice fishing rod doesn't have to be as complex as a reel-in fishing rod because there is no casting involved. With ice fishing, all you have to do is lower some fishing wire with a weight and fish hook on it through a hole in the ice and wait for something to bite.
Things You'll Need
- Broom
- Powered miter saw
- Drill
- Fishing wire (4-feet)
- Fishing hook
- Weight
- Bait (optional)

Cut the sweeper off of a standard broom and cut one end of the broom stick into a stake-like tip. Use a powered miter saw to make the cut. The same saw can be used to make the sharp tip.

Drill a hole into the end of the broom stick opposite the sharp tip. The hole only needs to be wide enough to thread some fishing wire through it.

Cut a length of fishing wire so that you have at least 4 feet of fishing wire to attach to your ice fishing rod.

Thread one end of the fishing wire through the hole on the broom stick and attach the fishing wire to the broom stick using a series of two simple knots.

Attach a fishing hook and weight to the end of the fishing wire opposite the broom stick in the same manner as the fishing wire was attached to the broom stick.

Attach some bait onto the fishing hook and dip the hook and weight into a hole in the ice over a pond or lake, then push the sharp end of the rod into the ice and wait for a fish to bite on the hook. When a fish bites on the hook, you'll see a tug on the fishing rod. Pull the fishing wire out of the water and unhook the fishing hook from the fish's mouth.

Be careful not to go ice fishing over thin ice.
