How to Mount a Flat Screen on a Brick Fireplace Wall

Flat screen TVs are relatively easy to mount on a brick wall.

Don't shy away from mounting a flat screen TV onto a brick wall, as it is a task that only seems hard, despite the fragile nature of your TV. A brick-wall installed TV provides plenty of wow factor from a design standpoint, but it is superior in both support and visual appeal compared to many standard drywall stud-mounted wall mounts. Mount your flat screen TV on your brick fireplace wall and you will be able to watch TV and a crackling fire at the same time.

Things You'll Need

• Drill
• Masonry bit
• Wall anchors
• Industrial glue
• Philips screw driver

Instructions

1. Hold the wall mount's mounting plate to the brick wall and select an area where you want to hang the mount. Note the location of the mounting holes on the mounting plate. Mark the location of the mounting holes on the brick with a pencil for future reference. The ideal location will have the mounting holes centered on the brick, because brick is stronger than mortar and drilling into a corner of the brick can cause chipping.

2. Use a masonry attachment to drill the mounting holes that you marked with a pencil. Blow all dust and debris out of the holes. Apply glue to the outside of the wall anchors and insert them into the mounting holes.

3. Line the mounting holes of the mounting plate with the holes in the wall anchors and secure the mounting plate to the wall by inserting screws through the mounting holes and into the wall anchors.

4. Line the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA)-compliant screw holes in the back of the TV to the VESA holes in the mounting plate. Insert the VESA screws through the VESA holes in the mounting plate and into the VESA holes in the TV. You will need to have a friend either hold the TV, or screw in the VESA screws, as one person cannot do both.

Tips & Warnings

• Do a heat test before mounting your flat screen on a brick fireplace wall to make sure your TV will be safe from heat. Mounting Tips suggests that you "tape a thermometer to the wall above the fireplace then build a fire and let it roar. If the mantel doesn't get hotter than 90 degrees or collect soot, you're probably OK."
