How to Train to Become a Certified Forklift Operator
Certified forklift operators perform a diverse range of jobs, such as stocking warehouses and moving merchandise throughout transportation hubs. Most employers expect potential employees to have certification, ensuring they know how to maneuver a forklift properly and can perform required maintenance on the equipment. In order to gain certification, a forklift operator, must attend appropriate education and gain certification upon completion from the establishment or school providing the training. The challenge though is finding a school or organization with a solid reputation, offering such training.

Apply to an apprenticeship program for forklift driving. One of the most reputable apprenticeship programs is with the International Union of Operating Engineers. The training program garners national recognition and lasts for three years. In addition to training, with the apprenticeship program you also have the opportunity to earn an income while you learn. Your rate of pay is approximately half of a journeyman's rate and will depend on you local prevailing market rate. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you gain certification as a forklift operator.

Attend and graduate from a school offering forklift-driver certification, if you are unable to secure a spot in a good apprenticeship program. One such school well recognized in the southwestern United States is the Forklift University. Such schools typically offer full driver training and certification for inexperienced forklift operators and basic certification courses, to include OSHA certification for experienced drivers. Courses usually last anywhere from one week to a couple of months and certification is offered once you complete and pass all courses. Expect to learn how to maneuver and operate a forklift, as well as perform maintenance on the equipment. Fees for such courses vary, but an average cost around $2,000 for completion and certification.

Apply to the Job Corps if you are unable to attend a school due to proximity or associated fees. The Job Corps offers a forklift driving certification through its facilities maintenance program with minimal associated fees. You will need to apply for admissions into the Job Corps and gain acceptance to attend the program. Once you complete the program, you will gain certification as a forklift operator.

Tips & Warnings
Good forklift drivers need to develop excellent eye and hand coordination and must have a keen sense of organization. Most of your day will consist of stacking products inside a warehouse working at fast speeds, while keeping the warehouse organized so products are readily accessible on a moments notice.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities over the next ten years for forklifts drives will decline slightly due to increases in technology and efficiency. This makes certification that much more crucial in securing employment when competing for jobs.
