There are no road signs to guide you to your ideal career. You will have to carefully map out your own plan for the future.

If you are unhappy with your job or want to advance your career, you may want to develop a career plan. A career plan allows you to focus your dissatisfaction and ambitions in a positive way. Evaluate where you are now and where you would like to be in the short and long term. The process of creating a career plan will allow you do understand what you need to do in order to reach both your short- and long-term goals.

      Evaluate your current situation in life. Compile a list of what you like about your life and what you dislike.

      Think about your passions, likes and dislikes and write them down. Think about your strengths and weaknesses and write them down.

      Define what success means to you. What is your dream job? Evaluate where you are in relation to that job.

      Identify what you need to do to get there. Use a computer with an Internet connection to research what qualifications you will need to follow the career path to get to your dream job and achieve success as you have defined it. Research the career path you are interested in. Look at the projected outlook for that industry. Find out what you have to do to advance in this industry.

      Write down the qualifications you will need to advance in your selected career path based on your research. Establish a timeline with specific goals to achieve. Be realistic about your current situation and set modest goals that are achievable with hard work and focus.

  • Evaluate your career plan on a regular basis so it reflects your current situation in life. Use your career plan to guide your actions, but do not allow the plan to come in the way of life as it unfolds.

  • Take into consideration your relationships when creating a career plan. Your timeline may have to be altered to accommodate a life partner's own path.
