Cutting a Square Wedding Cake

Cut a square wedding cake into serving slices to serve it.

When the wedding reception festivities eventually progress to the wedding cake, proceed carefully to cut into the cake properly. Generally, the bride and groom take their first tastes of the cake before someone else tackles the task of cutting the cake to serve it. The cutting process differs slightly depending upon the shape of the layers; however, the basic method is the same. Cutting a square wedding cake involves cutting each tier separately and serving the pieces on plates to the guests.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the top tier of the cake by slipping the two spatulas beneath the cake layer and lifting it straight up and off the top of the cake. Place this tier onto a serving plate and set it aside to save for the bride and groom.

    • 2

Cut a horizontal line in the next largest tier with the cake-cutting knife. Make this horizontal line 2 inches from the side edge of the tier.

    • 3

Cut 1-inch vertical slices from the edge of the cake, stopping at the horizontal line you cut previously. Cut this entire row of cake into 1-inch slices.

    • 4

Remove each 1-inch-wide slice with the serving spatula and place each slice of cake onto a plate.

    • 5

Repeat the previous steps to slice another row of cake and cut the row into 1-inch-wide slices. Place each slice onto a plate. Repeat this process until you slice and serve the entire tier.

    • 6

Cut the next tier using the same method, serving each horizontal row of cake as you slice it.

    • 7

Continue slicing and serving each tier until you have enough slices of cake to serve the guests. Stop slicing and serving cake when you think you have enough cake served. If you need more cake slices, resume slicing the cake using the same technique.
