Learn to replace the backlight on a Dell Inspiron laptop LCD screen.

If the screen on your Dell Inspiron LCD begins to go dim, or go out completely, it is usually caused by your LCD screen's backlight going bad. The backlight on the back of your LCD screen illuminates and helps you view images on your LCD screen. Replacing is the LCD backlight is not difficult, but it does require disassembly of your Dell Inspiron laptop.

      Turn off your laptop, disconnect the power cable and any other cables or miscellaneous external devices. Close the LCD screen until it clicks shut, and then place the laptop face-down. Remove the battery pack from its compartment and set it aside.

      Place the laptop face-up, and then open the LCD screen as far as it will go. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry up the keyboard bezel, which is a small plastic strip between the keyboard and LCD screen.

      Remove the Phillips-head screws securing the front panel of the LCD screen cover to the laptop. Remove the front panel and set it aside. The number of securing screws vary from Inspiron model to Inspiron model.

      Remove the securing Phillips-head screws from each side of the outer metal frame of the LCD screen. Disconnect the backlight power connectors from each side of the LCD inverter inside the bottom edge of the LCD screen casing. Remove the small screws, if any, securing the LCD inverter to the LCD screen casing. Remove the inverter and set it aside.

      Disconnect the video cable from the LCD screen near the keyboard assembly. Then lift the LCD screen from its casing, then place it gently face-down over the keyboard assembly. Place a soft cloth over the keyboard assembly to avoid scratching the surface of the LCD screen.

      Remove the tape securing the backlight to the back side of the LCD screen, then very carefully remove the backlight assembly from the LCD screen.

      Repeat this procedure in reverse to install the replacement LCD backlight.
