How to Replace the Chuck on a Chicago Pneumatic Drill
Many drill chucks, including those on the Chicago pneumatic drill, use a key to tighten the chuck around the bit. More modern drills employ a keyless chuck, where the user simply turns the chuck grip to tighten the chuck. Replacing the chuck on any drill requires the same steps, which are done with just a few basic hand tools. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Disconnect the Chicago pneumatic drill from the air hose by grasping the coupler where the hose meets the bottom of the drill and pulling downward.
-
2
Insert the chuck key into the key hole and twist the key counterclockwise to loosen the chuck. Remove any bit from the keyed chuck.
-
-
3
Turn the chuck counterclockwise (as you look at the end of the chuck) until the chuck's jaws are at their widest point.
-
4
Locate the set screw inside the chuck. Insert an Allen wrench into this screw, and turn clockwise to remove the screw.
-
5
Place the drill on a work table. Insert the chuck key into the chuck, then tap on the chuck with a mallet, turning the chuck counterclockwise to break it loose from the drive shaft. Once the chuck is loose, turn it counterclockwise by hand until it comes off the shaft.
-
6
Twist the new chuck onto the drive shaft by positioning the threads of the chuck over the shaft and turning the chuck clockwise until it stops moving.
-
7
Connect the air hose to the pneumatic drill. Set the drill's direction switch to the right. Grasp the new chuck's grip and engage the trigger, turning the chuck clockwise until the jaws are tight.
-
8
Flip the direction switch to the left, and loosen the jaws just until they're at their widest point.
-
9
Insert the set screw into the hole inside the drill chuck, and tighten (counterclockwise) with an Allen wrench.
