How to Install an Exhaust Manifold on a 1998 Honda Civic

An a 1998 Honda Civic, the exhaust manifold mounts to the cylinder head of the engine and routes the exhaust gases out of the engine and into the exhaust. This manifold is made of cast iron, as it has to deal with large amounts of heat. Should you ever need to service the exhaust or replace a head gasket, the exhaust manifold will have to come off as well. When it comes time to install it again, it should take about 30 minutes to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape the mating surface on the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold using the gasket scraper. Put a thin coat of anti-seize compound onto the threads of the exhaust manifold studs, then install the studs in the cylinder head using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket

    • 2

Install the exhaust manifold gasket on the studs. Then set the exhaust manifold onto the studs and tighten the nuts in sequence from the inside of the cylinder head out using an open-end wrench.

    • 3

Mount the exhaust manifold to the exhaust using the factory gasket and the hardware on the exhaust. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the oxygen sensor and install that onto the exhaust manifold using an open-end wrench. Install the heat shield for the exhaust manifold using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then plug the connection for the oxygen sensor into the stock engine harness.
