Sew your own bench cushions.

Benches can add a touch of relaxation to any home. They can be seen gracing sunrooms, patios, and even yards. Although they can add a touch of grace, if you sit on the bench for a long period of time your bottom may begin to feel the effects of it. An easy resolution for a hard bench is to cover the seat with a cushion. By sewing your own bench cushions instead of using store-bought ones, you can create a look that truly represents your style and flair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tape measure to obtain the length and width of the bench. Measure only the seat portion of the bench, and write the measurement down in feet and inches.

    • 2

Purchase a piece of high density foam from your local fabric store. You must also purchase two pieces of fabric to cover the foam. Both the foam and the pieces of fabric must meet the length and width specifications from the previous step.

    • 3

Lay the two pieces of fabric out on a flat working surface. They should be lying one on top of another in a "mirroring" fashion, with the print sides together.

    • 4

Use your needle and thread to sew a hem along three sides of the fabric. The three sides should include the two short sides and one of the long sides. Leave the remaining long side unhemmed. If you don't know how to sew, you can use hemming tape instead. Hemming tape can be purchased from most retail stores as well as fabric stores.

    • 5

Sew a zipper into the long unhemmed side of the fabric.

    • 6

Stuff the high density foam into the long unhemmed side of the fabric. Ensure that the cushion is completely and neatly tucked into the fabric.

    • 7

Zip the cover to conceal the foam. Place your new cushion on top of the seat portion of the bench.
