Servicing air conditioner filters

One of the most important bits of maintenance to keep an air conditioner running smoothly is replacement of the air filters. Efficient filters keep the inside of the ductwork cleaner than less efficient filter elements. The result is more frequent replacement. A good rule of thumb is replace residential air conditioning filter elements every month. The savings on energy and future air conditioner maintenance will far outweigh the cost of filters. Instructions

    • 1

Locate the return air duct to the air conditioner. If there is only one outside unit, chances are there is only one return air filter inside the home. Often located in the ceiling of more modern homes, the return filter housing is larger than the air conditioning registers discharging air into the home.

    • 2

Remove the screws or unlatch the tabs to open the filter grid. Two fastener types are common on filter grid covers. Some use screw-like fasteners to attach the grid, while others latches. If screws are not visible on the filter grid cover, look for two recessed latches on the same side of the cover. The opposite side of the cover has hinges to swing the grid open and access the filter.

    • 3

Take a flat screwdriver, butter knife or spoon and flip the latches open by pulling them out. Once latches are at a 90 degree angle, they are completely open. Swing the grid open and remove the filter element inside.

    • 4

Clean the vent louvers and the inside frame of the return filter housing with a clean paintbrush or duster. Remove excess dust and the accumulation of dirt to extend the life of the new filter.

    • 5

Insert the new air conditioner filter into the frame making sure the arrows on the outside edge of the filter are pointed toward the inside of the duct. Firmly press the filter into place without distorting its cardboard frame.

    • 6

Close the filter screen door flush with the frame. Close the latches on the door by pressing them inward against the filter grid until they are flush. If screws are used to hold the grid in place, use the screwdriver and reinstall the screws until tight. Recheck the filter in a few weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • The filter size is printed on the cardboard frame along the outer edge of the filter.

  • Always reinstall the proper size filter; even a small air gap between the filter and filter housing will allow a large amount of dust and contaminants to enter the air conditioner system.

  • Turn the air conditioner off before removing the filter door and servicing the air conditioner filter.
