In Michigan, you can apply for unemployment benefits online.

If you become unemployed in Michigan you can apply for unemployment benefits using the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) website. To file online you must have been employed in Michigan by 1 to 19 employers during the previous 18 months. You also need the mailing address of your previous employers. You may not apply if you have filed for unemployment in another state within the previous 12 months or used multiple Social Security numbers within the previous 18 months.

  • Names of employers over past 18 months
  • Dates of employment at each of the employers
  • Wages paid by each of the employers
  • Your bank's routing transit number (optional)
  • Your bank account number (optional)
  • Alien Registration Number with the expiration date of your work authorization (optional)

Instructions

      Confirm that the computer you are using is attached to a printer so you can print out your claim's confirmation number, in addition to other important information.

      Enter the information requested on each screen. Items marked with a red star are required. The questions you will be asked will depend upon the answers you provide.

      Answer all questions, unless you see instructions saying a response is not required.

      Navigate through the questions by using your "Tab" key. A yellow arrow will show you where you are on the list of questions. There will be an explanation, on the left-hand side of your screen, clarifying what information is required on that line.

      Click on the "Proceed" button when you have finished entering all of the required information. Wait for the confirmation page to be displayed and print it out for your records. Keep this information in a safe place. It is proof that you filed your claim.

      Choose whether or not you want to receive you benefits through a debit card or through direct deposit into your personal bank account. Based upon your answer, you will be asked some additional questions and will then receive a notice of confirmation.

      Register for work if you receive the "Notice to Register for Work" page. Print the page as it will have information on where and when you need to report to register.
