How to Put an OS 10 on an IBM Computer

Mac OS X, the Apple operating system, has successfully made its way to PC hardware thanks to an underground community of hackers. The process has been simplified drastically over the years, and a large part of the help has been Apple's switch to Intel processors. With Intel processors on board, the Apple hardware, and the way it interacts with the software, is much more similar to that of PCs. While the process is easy, it will not work on every computer. The group that made it all happen keeps an updated list of hardware known to work fairly well.

Things You'll Need

  • Mac OS X Install DVD
  • USB flash drive
  • NetBook Installer utility

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the flash drive to an open USB port on the Apple Macintosh computer. Insert the Install DVD into the system's DVD drive. Download the NetBook Installer utility (see Resources).

    • 2

Open "Disk Utility" from the "Applications" folder. Click the USB drive (from the Disk Utility sidebar) and select "Partition." Change "Volume Scheme" so that the USB drive will be "1 Partition." Set the "Options" to "Master Boot Record" and click "Apply." You will be warned that all data on the drive will be erased in the process. Click "OK" to confirm this.

    • 3

Select "Restore" (with the USB drive still highlighted) and drag the DVD to "Source." Drag the flash drive to "Destination." Click "Restore." Again confirm that you want to proceed with the action.

    • 4

Open the NetBook Installer utility. Select "Mac OS X Install DVD" from the drop-down menu (it will most likely be the only available choice) and select "OK" to format the drive. Remove the USB flash drive and put the Apple computer away.

    • 5

Restart the IBM. Enter the BIOS settings before the OS loads up, typically by pressing "F2." Move "USB Storage" to the top of the boot order, within the "Boot" tab. Save the settings and exit the BIOS. Insert the USB flash drive into an open USB slot and restart the computer again--this time, it will load into the Mac OS X Installer.

    • 6

Open Disk Utility (from the Utilities menu). Format the IBM's internal hard drive much in the same way you formatted the USB flash drive earlier. Select "1 Partition," set the "Options" to "GUID Partition Table" and set the format to "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)." Click "Apply" and again, confirm the action when prompted. Quit Disk Utility when complete.

    • 7

Click "Install Now" to install Mac OS X. Follow any on-screen prompts. When the installation is finished, the computer will reboot in Mac OS X (be sure to remove the USB drive).

Tips & Warnings

  • Before proceeding, it is vital to make sure your IBM computer can run Mac OS X. Check your hardware components against the list of known compatible hardware. If your system is not running the proper hardware, there is no guarantee the installation will work.
