Curtain Tieback Instruction

Open the curtains in your home to let in the light on a sunny day. Rather than pulling the curtains back and forth across the rod and readjusting them each time, you can use curtain tiebacks to pull the curtains back and hold them in place. If you know how to use a sewing machine, you can make your own set of curtain tiebacks in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

• Graph paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Buckram
• Lining fabric
• Fabric
• Iron
• Sewing machine
• 4 curtain rings
• Needle
• Thread
• 2 hooks

Instructions

1. Fold a large piece of graph paper in half lengthwise. Draw the shape of the tieback on the paper with a pencil, curving the outer edges upwards.

2. Cut along the drawn lines with a pair of scissors. Unfold the graph paper. This will serve as the pattern.

3. Place the pattern on a piece of buckram and trace around the edges. Remove the pattern and cut along the lines on the buckram.

4. Place the buckram piece over the lining fabric and trace around the edges. Cut along the lines on the lining fabric.

5. Lay the tieback fabric on a flat surface and place the pattern in the center of the fabric. Draw a line all the way around the pattern, allowing one inch from the edge for the seam.

6. Turn the fabric wrong side up and lay the buckram in the center of the fabric. Place the lining over the buckram. Press the pieces with a hot iron.

7. Cut several small slits in the seam allowance around the fabric. Fold the seam over the liner and fold the edge under. Machine-stitch the seam.

8. Place a curtain ring on one end of the tieback and fold the edge over the ring towards the back of the tieback. Sew a straight stitch across the fabric with a needle and thread to secure the ring. Add a second ring on the other end in a similar manner. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 to make a second tieback.

9. Place a hook on each side of the window frame beside the curtains. Slide one of the curtain rings over the hook and pull the tieback around the curtain. Place the other curtain ring on the hook. Repeat on the other side. Adjust as needed.
