How to Make Feather Eyelashes
False eyelashes are not a new trend. Decades before they were available in corner drugstores, Hollywood starlets enhanced their allure by wearing false eyelashes for a dramatic and glamorous look. This is not to say that there is nothing new in fake eyelashes. Eyelash bars (beauty salons that specialize in applying false eyelashes) are becoming increasingly popular. Cosmetologists and aestheticians are trained to expertly apply lashes for temporary and semi-permanent wear. Materials to make the lashes have changed, too. Mink and sable hairs create a soft, feathery look, but for some real eye-popping, show-stopping drama, sport some fake lashes that are made of real feathers. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Cut a paper square, about 2x2 inches. Close one eye and place one corner of the square at the inner corner of your eye, laying the edge of the paper on the lash line. Trim the paper and hold against the lash line until the paper is the same width as the lash line. This paper pattern will help you make two matching feather eyelashes of the same length.

2
Select two matching feathers. Using scissors, cut out the portions of the feathers that you want to use to make the eyelashes, the same length as your paper pattern. Use a portion of the feather that has a thin central shaft. Notice that one end has longer barbs (individual feather fibers) than the other.

Pull the barbs off one side of a feather with your fingers. When you pull the barbs off the second feather, the feathers should look like mirror-images of each other, creating a left and right eyelash. Holding the eyelash, press the end of the shaft between the tip of your thumbnail and your forefinger. Pull the eyelash as you apply pressure, to soften and curve the shaft. You may have to repeat several times to make the eyelash flexible enough to form to your lash line and stay in place when you put it on.

4
Spray the lash with Super-hold hairspray, then brush the eyelash to achieve the desired form. Repeat the steps to make two matching feather eyelashes.
