How to Make an American Flag From Paper

Make an American flag from paper.

Tell U.S. children the story of their country with the help of an original American flag paper craft project. Discussion of the original 13 states, President George Washington, Betsy Ross, the founding fathers and the country's geography is natural when kids are gluing the stripes and stars to the paper flag. This project is representative of the American flag when the country was just 13 states. The project could inspire a trivia session about U.S. history. When it's finished, put the flag in a window in your classroom or home.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out seven 2/3-inch-wide and 11-inch-long strips of red paper. Glue them to an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch piece of white construction paper at 1/2-inch intervals, or a hair less if you can manage.

    • 2

Cut a piece of blue construction paper to measure 4 inches square. Glue the square to the upper left-hand corner of the striped paper.

    • 3

Use the protractor to make a large circle on the blue square. Make 13 white construction paper stars with the star punch. Glue the stars on the blue square, following the circle pattern.

    • 4

Repeat the flag-making process on the other side of the paper to create a two-sided flag.

    • 5

Tie a knot in the string to create a long loop. Tape an 11-inch section of the loop to the entire top edge of the flag. Attach the suction cup to a window and hang the flag by the string loop.
