How to Make Homemade Paper Hats
Making homemade paper hats is an easy and inexpensive arts and crafts activity for young children. Using various paper materials from around the house, such as paper plates and newspapers, you can make different styles of paper hats. From the old classic newspaper sailor hat to a new age paper plate sun visor, these paper hat making activities are sure to entertain you and your children for hours.

Newspaper Sailor Hat

Place a single sheet of newspaper on a flat working surface with the long edges facing left and right.

Fold the right edge of the newspaper over to the left edge of the newspaper and reopen the fold.

Fold the top edge of the newspaper down to the bottom edge of the newspaper.

Fold the top left corner of the newspaper down at a 45-degree angle so the top edge meets the center crease line.

Fold the top right corner of the newspaper down at a 45-degree angle so the top edge meets the center crease line.

Tape the corners of the flaps together with a small piece of clear tape.

Fold the bottom edge of the front flap up 1/2 inch.

Flip the newspaper over.

Fold the bottom edge of the front flap up 1/2 inch.

Open the bottom of the hat and place it on your head.

Cut a slit in one edge of the plate 3/4 inch toward the center of the paper plate.

Cut an oval from the edge of the slit around the middle of the paper plate leaving the cuts closer to the edge with the slit than the other edges of the plate. The oval should be smaller than your head size.

Cut the rim off the back (the side where the slit was first cut) and the sides of the paper plate.

Glue the slit in the back of the plate back together and wait for the glue to dry.

Decorate the paper plate visor with craft paints and foam cut-outs.
