Check your debit card balance frequently

Prepaid debit cards are popular choices for holiday giving, birthdays and other special occasions, and they are often used as corporate and business rewards as well. Unlike a traditional gift card, which can be used only at a single store, a prepaid debit card can be used anywhere Visa and Mastercard are accepted. If you have received one of these cards, you need to check the balance carefully in order to get the most out of your gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the 16-digit account number on the front of the card. This account number might be printed on the back of the card as well, generally near the signature panel.

    • 2

Look under the signature panel on the back of the card for the toll-free customer service number. Call the number and navigate through the prompts for the balance check option.

    • 3

Enter the 16-digit account number from your card when prompted. Depending on the card, you might also be asked to enter the three digit security code printed on the end of the signature panel.

    • 4

Write down the current balance of the card and keep track of the purchases you make with the card. You can use either a simple piece of tablet paper or a spreadsheet program to track your purchases.
