How to Make a 36 Inch Floor Weaving Loom thumbnail
Weaving is a craft that creates artwork as well as practical items.

Making a floor weaving loom in a 36-inch size enables weaving of rugs and blankets as large as 3 feet square. New fabric or old fabric cut into strips will create unique works of art on a weaving loom that are soft to the touch. Weaving rope and jute creates heavy rugs, wall hangings and other items that have texture.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure two 36-inch pieces from each of the two 1-inch-by-2-inch boards. Mark with a carpenter's pencil.

    • 2

Cut the boards with a circular saw to create four pieces of lumber that are each 36 inches long.

    • 3

Place the four pieces of lumber on a table or other flat surface to form a square with the 2-inch sides facing upward. Place one metal "L" corner bracket on each of the corner junctions of the pieces of lumber facing upward.

    • 4

Screw two screws in each side of the "L" on one corner to hold the joints together. Two screws will be on one piece of lumber in the corner and two screws will be on the adjacent piece of lumber that forms the corner. Repeat for the other three corners.

    • 5

Lay a measuring tape on the top 2-inch-wide side of the loom facing upward. Mark a dot every inch along the side. Repeat for the bottom of the loom. The top and bottom sides of the loom are whichever two sides you choose that are across from each other. All four sides of the loom are 36 inches and equal in size.

    • 6

Place a screw on top of each dot and screw it in with a drill. Leave the screw about 1/2 inch above the wood so that it is not screwed into the wood tightly.

    • 7

Wrap fishing line around the first screw on the right side of the loom at the top corner. Tie the fishing line in a knot on this screw. Pull the fishing line vertically down to the right side of the screw directly opposite at the bottom and wrap it around the screw starting from the right of the screw and going around to the left of the screw.

    • 8

Stretch the fishing line straight up to the second screw on the right side at the top and wrap it around from the bottom. Keep the fishing line taunt across all screws on the loom. Pass the fishing line back to the bottom of the loom around the second screw from the right in the same manner. Wind the fishing line from top to bottom back and forth in this manner.

    • 9

Tie the fishing line on the last screw so that it is in a knot and will stay in place.

    • 10

Lean the floor weaving loom against a wall and sit in front of it on a chair to weave items.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any scrap wood will make the frame for a weaving loom.

  • The weaving loom tines can be nails instead of screws.

  • Weave jute on a loom to create totes and purses that are sturdy and long lasting.
