How to Repair a Door Knob

Repairing a modern door knob that has been damaged is a little like darning a sock---it simply isn't done anymore. Self-contained modern latching systems install all at once, and each has specialized knob assemblies that are not sold separately. However, if you have an old latch system, the kind with separate knobs that sit on a square metal spindle, and the knobs are loose and unresponsive, repair is easy. It's a simple matter of replacing the spindle, which allows you to keep that great old knob. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement door knob spindle (available at any hardware store)

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the nut on the side of one of the door knobs. Pull the knob off. Pull out the knob from the other side, sliding the spindle out of the latch mechanism.

    • 2

Loosen the nut on the knob that is still attached to the spindle, and remove the spindle.

    • 3

Thread one end of the new spindle into the hole on either one of the door knobs. Turn the spindle in a clockwise direction (like a screw) until you cannot turn it anymore. Tighten the nut on the side of the knob to secure the spindle.

    • 4

Slide the spindle through the square hole in the latch mechanism on the door, until the attached knob is set into the mechanism and the spindle is partly sticking out the other side.

    • 5

Thread the other door knob onto the jutting end of the spindle, turning the door knob clockwise until it is tight. Tighten the nut on the side of the door knob.
