How to Make a 1910s Flapper Dress
Flapper costumes are popular with young women for Halloween and other costumed events,, and may also be used in plays. Because of this, it is easy to find a flapper costume to purchase in a store or online. However, these store-bought costumes can be expensive. In addition to this, it can be hard to find the right size. Fortunately, it's easy to make a cheap homemade flapper dress using common sewing supplies and basic sewing skills.

1
Measure the widest part of the torso. Cut out two pieces of fabric that are each 40 inches long and half as wide as the torso measurement, plus 1 inch for seam allowance.
-
2
Lay the two fabric pieces directly on top of each other, right sides of the fabric together. Cut a semi-circle out of the middle of one of the shorter edges of each piece of fabric, about 6 inches wide, for the collar.
-
-
3
Cut a "J" shape out of the top of each of the longer sides of the fabric pieces, each about 6 inches long, to form the arm holes.
-
4
Sew up each of the longer sides of the fabric, stopping at the bottom of the "J" shaped arm holes. Sew the top of the dress together, leaving the semi-circular collar open.
-
5
Fold over the bottom of the dress, the raw edges of the arm holes and the raw edges of the collar 1/4 inch, and iron the folds in place.
-
6
Fold over the fabric 1/4 inch more and sew the folds in place to form hems. Turn the dress right side out.
-
7
Cut out 5 strips of fringe trim that are each long enough to wrap around the entire dress. Sew the strips of fringe all the way around the dress in rows starting just below the arm holes.
-
8
Cut out 6 more piece of fringe that are about 20 inches long. Sew these pieces of fringe to the front and back of the dress on the top, 3 strips for each side.
