Becoming a Realtor in California
Becoming a realtor in California involves several steps. There is a difference between real estate agents and realtors. They both must have a real estate license, but realtors must abide by a code of ethics set by the National Association of Realtors (NAR). The code of ethics describes how you are required to interact with clients, competing agents and how you should run business in general. Reported violations to the code of ethics can result in a termination of your affiliation. California has many chapters of Realtor Associations and each offers specific guidelines for joining their organization.

Obtain your real estate license. It is a requirement in all 50 states that you must have a real estate license before entering the profession. This can include anywhere from thirty to sixty hours of classroom sessions or training and passing a certification exam. You can find out more about test dates and any applicable fees through your association.

Locate your local Realtor's Association and find out their specific requirements for joining their group. You can find your specific chapter through the NAR website realtor.org. Most will require you to be sponsored and work for a company that is already a member of their association.

Apply to your local chapter and remit their associated fees. You may have to also complete a training session on the NAR code of ethics. Provide documentation of your real estate license.

Maintain your real estate license. This will include re-certifying every two to three years and participating in continuing education.
