Bargello needlepoint creates a zig-zag design.

Mastering the Bargello needlepoint technique is a sure way to create an eye-catching design with very little fuss. No specific pattern is required and any type or color of thread can be used. Create a Bargello Christmas ornament with a small piece of needlepoint canvas or cover a chair with the attractive and colorful pattern. Bargello needlepoint, which has been popular since the 15th Century, is characterized by repeated color rows of straight stitches arranged in zig-zag lines.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the threaded tapestry needle, from back to front, in the seventh grid square down from the upper left hand corner of the needlepoint canvas. Insert the needle, from front to back, up four grids straight above the insertion point for the first stitch.

    • 2

Move one row to the right and up one grid row for the second stitch, which will also cover four grids, moving up.

    • 3

Again, move one row to the right and up one grid row for the third stitch, which will also cover four grids, moving up.

    • 4

Move one row to the right and down one grid row for the fourth stitch, which will also cover four grids, moving up.

    • 5

Move one row to the right and down one grid row for the fifth stitch, which will also cover four grids, moving up.

    • 6

Move one row to the right and down one grid row for the sixth stitch, which will also cover four grids, moving up.

    • 7

Repeat the above steps across the canvas. Subsequent rows will follow the initial pattern. A different color thread is used for each row. A color-pattern repeat series, using the colors in the same order, will be established.
