Some companies made the imitations so more people could afford the style, and some companies made them to fool people into buying the purses for the same price. There are a few things to look for in a purse to decide if it is Dooney & Burke or an imitation. The best thing you can do to check is look at the details of the purse. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look for the duck logo on the inside of the purse. If there is not a duck label sewn inside the purse with visible stitching, your purse was not made by Dooney & Burke and is a fake. Some makers put a fake duck logo on the inside of the purse though, so it is important to keep looking for other signs.

    • 2

Look at the color and thread texture on the stitching of the duck logo. This should be the same stitching as the whole purse. If the color or texture is slightly different it is an imitation purse.

    • 3

Examine all the metal parts on the purse. Dooney & Burke uses pure brass for all of their buckles, legs, and knobs. If any of these parts on your purse are not brass it is not a real Dooney & Burke purse. Some imitation purses will simply paint over silver in a brass tone, so it might be a good idea to test the metal.

    • 4

Feel the leather and notice the color of it. All Dooney & Burke bags, except black-on-black purses, use British tan leather that is flexible. If your leather is any other color, or feels thin, stiff and not like leather it is a fake purse.

    • 5

Look at the pockets on your purse. All Dooney & Burke purses use dark brown pockets no matter the color of the purse. The only purses they do not do this on are black-on-black special-order purses.

    • 6

Look for the registration number underneath the leather seam on the inside of the purse. The only colors Dooney & Burke use for their registration numbers are red, white and blue. If the numbers are in any other color, it is a fake bag.
