How to Make a Small Model Sailboat
Model sailboats can be built out of many different materials. If you are less artistically inclined, then you might want to make a simple, small, wooden sailboat model just for the purposes of display. While your model sailboat doesn't have to float, it should look like a sailboat and the easiest way to accomplish that is by not forgetting to add a sail.
Things You'll Need
- One 4-inch x 4-inch x 6-inch wooden block (pinewood optional)
- Powered miter saw
- Pencil
- Drill
- One 4-inch x ¾-inch wooden peg
- Wood glue
- Chisel
- One bandana (any color)
- Scissors
- Multipurpose glue
- Paint

1
Cut a wooden block so that it is 4 inches wide by 6 inches long and 4 inches thick. It doesn't matter what type of wood you use, though pinewood could be easy to find and easy to work with. Cut the piece using a powered miter saw.
-
2
Draw a vertical line on one of the 4-inch sides of the block with a pencil. The line should be about 2 inches from one edge.
-
-
3
Draw a horizontal line on the same 4-inch side of the block. This line should be about 1 inch from one edge. The edge that is 1 inch from this line will be the top of the boat, while the edge that is 3 inches from this line will be the bottom of the boat.
-
4
Draw a line from the intersection of the vertical line and the bottom edge of the sailboat to the intersection of the horizontal line and the opposite edge of the block.
-
5
Cut along the line drawn on Step 4 using the miter saw to cut at that angle.
-
6
Drill a hole big enough to fit a three-quarter-inch thick wooden peg that is about 4 inches long on the top of the sailboat. Remember, the top of the sailboat is the edge that was not cut by the previous steps. The hole should only be about a half-inch deep.
-
7
Pour wood glue into the hole drilled on Step 6 and insert the wooden peg into the hole. Allow time for the wood glue to dry.
-
8
Remove any excess glue that may have seeped out of the hole with the peg in it using a chisel to carefully chisel off the dried glue.
-
9
Cut a triangle shape out of a bandanna using a pair of scissors. The triangle's base should be about 2 inches long. Use scissors to cut out the triangle.
-
10
Attach the bandanna triangle to the wooden peg by applying multipurpose glue along the base of the bandanna triangle and attaching the base of the triangle to the peg. Allow time for the glue to dry. This will be the sail of the sailboat.
-
11
Paint the sailboat however you like.
