How to Make a Drum Set Sound Good

To make sure a drum set sounds good, it should be properly and evenly tuned. Different drummers tune their drum sets to different specifications, and a lot of the tuning process depends on the personal preference of how you like your drums to sound. Your drum set will come with a drum key that will be used to tune all the tension rods around the heads of your snare, toms and bass drum. All tension rods on a given head should all be turned to the exact same spot in order to make sure your drum set is properly tuned.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a tension rod on the head of one of the toms, then twist it clockwise with the drum key to tighten it. Remember how many twists you make, then stop once the rod is fairly tight.

    • 2

Move to the tension rod exactly opposite to the one you just turned, and twist that rod to the same tension you gave the first one. Go around the drum head with all the tension rods and calibrate them to the same setting.

    • 3

Play the tom with the drum stick, then adjust the tension rods either tighter or looser depending on your preference of sound. Again, make sure when you tighten a rod that you tighten the one opposite from it next, or else you will warp your drum heads.

Repeat this process for each drum head until you get the sound you want from each piece of the kit.
