How to Level Ground for Above Ground Pools
A level surface is needed for an above ground pool. The walls of a pool are designed to withstand equal amounts of water pressure. If the pool sits on an uneven surface, one side receives too much pressure from the unequally distributed water. This often results in collapsing of the pool wall. A few simple steps can prevent a pool from buckling and ensure its longevity. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a flat area of ground for your pool. The area should be in the open and not surrounded by trees or near a hillside. Make sure there are no overhead obstructions such as power lines or underground hazards such as rocks or large tree roots. The area ideally will get plenty of sunlight to warm the water.

2
Dig up grass and rocks need with a shovel. The higher ground must be scaled to match the height of the lowest grade within the cleared area. Remove rocks an inch or two below the surface or they will push up over time and damage the pool lining.

3
Use a long board and level or a transit to ensure the area is leveled off. Place the level on top of the board laying flat on the ground. Continue raking the ground until it's level. Cover the cleaned off area with 2 inches of washed masonry sand. This creates a more level surface and adds extra protection to the lining from the harsh terrain under the pool site by absorbing rock and root movements.

4
Wet the sand thoroughly until it becomes heavy. Flatten it down with the board or some other large, flat tool. Add the patio bricks to the outside of the circle where the pool frame posts and buttresses will stand. This allows for more flush and complete settling of the structure.
