Place your stained garment on a work surface with the stain facing up. Pour rubbing alcohol on a clean sponge and blot at the hair-dye stain. Rinse off your sponge as the dye transfers into the sponge and apply more rubbing alcohol until the stain is gone.

Rinse your garment with cool water. Lay a clean white cloth on your work surface. Place the hair-dye stained garment on the clean white cloth with the stain facing down, coming into contact with the white cloth. Wet a clean sponge with turpentine and press the sponge against the back of the hair-dye stain. Change to a fresh white cloth as the stain transfers and rinse the sponge. Apply more turpentine to the sponge and when no further transfer occurs, rinse the stained area of your clothing thoroughly with cool water.

Make a paste with equal parts of powdered all-fabric bleach and water in a bowl. Dab a clean cloth into the paste and apply it to the stain, starting at the outside and working your way inward. Allow the paste to remain on the hair-dye stain for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water.

Launder your clothing, following the directions on the care label, using heavy-duty laundry detergent. Ensure the hair-dye stain is completely removed before you place it in the dryer, as the heat from the dryer will set the stain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rub petroleum jelly all around your hair line to keep hair dye from dripping past that point and onto your clothing.

  • Wear old clothing so that if you get hair dye on it, you can just throw it away; or wear the stained clothing only when dyeing your hair.
