How to Care for Torn Out Dog Nails
Many dog owners have had to care for a dog with a torn nail. Veterinarians recommend that owners bring their dogs in so they can examine the torn nail to ensure no further complications arise. However, if you can't get to a veterinarian immediately, there are a few things you can do to clean and remove the nail on your own. It's important to consider the dog's behavior before trying to remove a torn nail since he may be aggressive because he's in pain.

1
Place the muzzle on the dog if he is showing any form of aggressive behavior. This is to protect you from getting bitten while trying to remove the torn nail.
-
2
Remove the broken end of the nail with the nail clippers. This may require having one person hold the dog still and a second to remove the nail. The dog will try and move away from you since this will be painful for her.

4
Use a clean piece of gauze or cloth to apply pressure on the area.
-
5
Look at the nail and see if you find a nail stump. If so, use the antibiotic cream on the nail and wrap it to keep dirt and germs from the area.

6
Make an appointment to see your veterinarian, if you haven't already.

Continue to inspect the nail while it regrows to ensure there is no sign of infection.
