How to Make a Sandbag Out of a Pillowcase
Sandbags have many uses. In addition to holding back flood waters, they also make good weights for strength training exercises. While most people think of sandbags as burlap sacks filled with sand, you can use a number of other items to make sandbags. One of the most common household items used to make a sandbag is a pillowcase. If you are using the sandbags as weights, this homemade method also allows you to control the weight of the bag. Choose a pillowcase made of sturdy fabric to use as the sandbag. Good fabric choices are cotton or cotton blends, denim, corduroy and flannel. Stay away from lighter materials such as silk.

Open the top of the pillowcase and begin filling it with builder's sand using a shovel. Continue adding sand until the desired weight is achieved or until the bag is approximately 50 percent full.

Gather together the top open ends of the pillowcase and twist them two or three times to close the top.

Wrap twine tightly around the twisted area of the pillowcase five to six times and tie the free ends of the twine tightly in a knot to secure.

Tips & Warnings
If you will use the sandbag as an exercise weight, place the pillowcase on a scale as you fill it with sand. The scale makes it easy to make the sandbag a specific weight. Write the weight on the pillowcase using a permanent marker for future reference.
If you are using sandbags to hold back flood waters you can also fill them with garden soil instead of sand.
