Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pillowcase made of sturdy fabric to use as the sandbag. Good fabric choices are cotton or cotton blends, denim, corduroy and flannel. Stay away from lighter materials such as silk.

    • 2

Open the top of the pillowcase and begin filling it with builder's sand using a shovel. Continue adding sand until the desired weight is achieved or until the bag is approximately 50 percent full.

    • 3

Gather together the top open ends of the pillowcase and twist them two or three times to close the top.

    • 4

Wrap twine tightly around the twisted area of the pillowcase five to six times and tie the free ends of the twine tightly in a knot to secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you will use the sandbag as an exercise weight, place the pillowcase on a scale as you fill it with sand. The scale makes it easy to make the sandbag a specific weight. Write the weight on the pillowcase using a permanent marker for future reference.

  • If you are using sandbags to hold back flood waters you can also fill them with garden soil instead of sand.
