How to Make My Own Study Flash Cards

How to Make My Own Study Flash Cards thumbnail
Write your own flash cards to help you study.

Don't wait until the night before your test to make a stack of study flash cards; it will take too long and be too late for them to do you any good. Flash cards are an excellent memory aid and they are convenient because they are a compilation of your need-to-know information. They make flipping through a textbook and your notes before a test obsolete. Remember, flash cards can help you if you do two things: make them as you learn and study them.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Use different colored index cards to represent different classes. If you color code your index cards you will know to use the green cards to prepare for an English exam. This will keep you organized.

    • 2

Gather the facts. Write down key words, concepts and definitions from your textbook on paper. Use your own words. The easiest way to do this is to jot down different points your teacher stresses.

    • 3

Write a term on one side of a blank index card. Flip the card over and write the definition of the term on the opposite side of the index card. When possible, use examples to explain your definition. Repeat the process until all of the terms you previously wrote down have a corresponding card.

    • 4

Draw diagrams on both sides of an index card to help you remember parts of an item or a location. Point arrows at different parts of the diagram and make a question mark beside the arrow. On the reverse side, draw arrows pointing at the same parts of your diagram and write the correct answer next to the arrow. For example, you could draw the skeleton of the human hand on both sides of the card and place lines next to the different bones. Leave one side blank, but write the answers on the opposite side.

Tips & Warnings

  • To save time later, make the cards as you learn new material.

  • Don't wait too long to make the cards or it will take quite a bit of time to write all your "need to know" information.
