How to Dye Silk Fabric
Silk can be a trickier fabric to dye than cotton, as it is a protein-based fiber like wool or camel hair. To add long-lasting color, you will need open the cuticle of the fiber so that the dye can reach the fiber shaft. The cool down is equally as important so that the cuticle will close again. Be sure to change temperatures gradually and don't overheat, or else you will damage the fibers.
Things You'll Need
- Acid dye
- Dye pot
- Heating surface
- Tap water
- Vinegar
- Water thermometer
- Wooden spoon

1
Wet the fabric so that the silk is well-saturated. This will help for the color to attach more easily to the fibers.
-
2
Mix the dye solution in a dye pot over a heating surface such as a stove and add the fabric. Slowly bring the temperature to 120 degrees. Stir the fabric frequently for a more even coat.

3
Add the vinegar to the solution and keep the solution at that temperature for at least five minutes, depending on the instructions on the dye box. Continue to stir the fabric.
-
4
Turn up the temperature to a full simmer, letting it simmer for at least five minutes, stirring frequently. Turn off the heat, and let it cool completely.
-
5
Remove the fabric and lay it flat to dry.

Tips & Warnings
Dye will stain, so be sure that you are working with tools and surfaces that will be OK if they get color on them.
