How to Become a Bail Bondsman in Florida

In order to become a bail bondsman in Florida, you must obtain a state bail bond license. This license is much harder to acquire than in other states, and Florida has an extensive list of requirements, courses, tests, and prerequisites for it. You must be over 18, have no criminal record, and be a current resident of Florida. Once you have your license, you can begin applying for bail bondsman jobs in Florida.

      Call the Department of Financial Services at 850-413-3137 to register for the Florida state license course. This course is 2 or 3 weeks long and requires 120 hours of class time. Once you complete the course hours, you must pass a final examination. The fee for this course and examination is $40.

      Register for the correspondence course at the University of Florida by calling 352-392-1711. The course,called INS 3 Bail and Bond Insurance, costs $300.

      Go to a local police station so the officers can take your fingerprints and perform a criminal background check. This costs $35. Once this is done, call 850-413-3137 to have a Limited Surety Agent Temporary license form mailed to you. Complete the form, then mail it back to the Department of Financial Services address printed on it along with the $50 fee. Once you are approved by the Department, they will set up a one-year internship for you, where you operate under the supervision of a licensed bail bond agent for 52 weeks, working 30 hours a week.

      Call the Promissory Testing Center at 888-274-2020 to set up a time and location for your final examination. Bring a valid Florida driver's license and the $75 fee to the test. Once you pass, you will be mailed your bail bond license, and be eligible to serve as a bail bondsman in the state of Florida.
