Reference plays you studied in your paper's bibliography

Writing a bibliography or works-cited page can seem daunting, as there is a specific format to follow depending on the type of publication. However, in general most bibliographies require the same information about the source. To write a bibliography entry for a play, be sure you have information for the acts and scenes you referenced, as well as the other publication information.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the last name of the author of the play, followed by a comma, then the first name followed by a period. For example: Williams, Tennessee.

    • 2

Type the name of the play, highlight it, then choose Underline from your font options. Follow the title with a comma (not included in the underline).

    • 3

Type the act number, the scene number, and (if applicable) the line number you referenced, each number separated with a period and no spaces. For example, if you referenced Act II, Scene I, line eight, it would read: 2.1.8. If you referenced a selection of lines, such as lines eight through twelve, include a window: 2.1.8-12. Follow this with a period as shown.

    • 4

Type the title of the book if the play you referenced came from a collection, such as The Complete Works of Tennessee Williams, and underline the title, followed by a period. Type the name of the editor or compiler of the book, using an abbreviated title, followed by the first and last name and a period. For example: Ed. Marcy Doyle. If the play you are referencing is not from a collection or book, skip this step.

    • 5

Type the name of the city in which the play was published, followed by a colon. Type the name of the publisher followed by a comma, then the year of publication followed by a period. For example: New York: Harper, 1987.

    • 6

Type the page numbers you referenced if the play was in a book marked with page numbers, separated with a hyphen and followed by a period. For example: 324-366.
