How to Hold a Squash Racket

How to Hold a Squash Racket thumbnail
Grip your squash racket correctly to ensure your best performance.

Squash is a challenging two- or four-player sport that has its roots in medieval England, where rudimentary versions of the game began. Similar to tennis it uses a racket and a ball; however, the ball is hollow and rubber. The game is played inside a four-walled room, and the court is much smaller than a tennis court. Part of the challenge of playing squash involves hitting and playing the ball off the walls, rather than only on the ground. The grip you use on your squash racket is important--the way you hold the racket will determine your ability to properly control your swing.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the handle of the racket palm down, so that your hand is over it. Extend your index finger away from the rest of your fingers and toward the top of the handle.

    • 2

Rotate your racket until you are gripping it from underneath, palm up.

    • 3

Grip tightly and swing the racket back and forth. You should feel as though you have complete control over the movement of the racket. Turn your hand to make sure that middle of the handle is nestled in the "V" of your forefinger and thumb, with your forefinger extended away from the other fingers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Grip the racket tight enough so that it doesn't slip when you're playing a hard shot.
