How to Make an Irish Flag
The colors that make up a nation's flag are often symbolic and have designated meaning. Three colors make up the Irish flag. Green represents the Catholics of Ireland; orange represents the Protestants of Ireland; and the white stripe between the two represents the idea of unity between both people. If you are Irish or learning about the culture of Ireland, you can easily make an Irish flag to display your heritage.

- Scissors
- Green fabric
- White fabric
- Orange fabric

- Green thread
- White thread
- Iron
- Iron-on adhesive glue

Sewing Method

Cut a piece of green fabric 6 ½ inches wide by 12 inches tall. Repeat these steps with white fabric and orange fabric, too. Stick with the same kind of fabric for each color. Typically, flags are made of lightweight material, but any fabric can be used.

Lay your fabric on a flat surface and put one long edge of your green fabric about 1/2 inch over a long edge on the piece of white fabric. Pin in place.

Sew the green fabric to the white fabric using green thread that matches your green fabric, and small stitches that can be camouflaged.

Lay the other long end of the white fabric about 1/2 inch over one of the long ends of the orange fabric, pin and sew your white fabric to the orange piece as you did with the green fabric using white thread.
No-Sew Method

Cut a piece of white fabric, 18 inches wide by 12 inches tall, then cut a green piece of fabric 6 inches wide by 12 inches tall. Cut a piece of orange fabric the same size as the green fabric.

Apply iron-on adhesive glue to the edges of one side of the green fabric. Make the line of glue slightly smaller than 1/2 inch thick.

Flip the green piece over and place it on the left side of the white rectangle, making sure to line up the edges of the green fabric with the edges of the white rectangle.

Apply your iron, on high heat with no steam, over the green fabric and gently move it back and forth to adhere the green fabric to the white fabric. Do this for about one minute, constantly moving the iron in gentle, firm strokes.

Repeat steps 2 through 4 with the remaining piece of orange fabric, applying it to the right side of the triangle and lining up the edges evenly.

Tips & Warnings
For a fun project with children, make a flag out of soft craft felt. Use a method similar to the no-sew method, substituting fabric glue for the hot iron.
Make the flag any size you want. You can make smaller flags and glue them to Popsicle sticks or plastic rods. Or make larger flags and sew green loops onto the green edge to display them on a flagpole.
