Access the Internet from anywhere in your home with a Wi-Fi network.

A wireless home Internet system will allow you to access the web from anywhere in your home, whether you're on a laptop, PC or mobile device. Another major advantage of having wireless Internet is the fact that multiple computers are capable of logging onto the Internet simultaneously. Although setting up a Wi-Fi network, or wireless home Internet system, can seem intimidating at first, it can be accomplished relatively easily if you follow the appropriate steps and have a basic knowledge of computers.

Things You'll Need

  • Cable/DSL modem

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your computer and your Cable/DSL modem box.

    • 2

Find the Ethernet port on the back of your computer where the modem is connected. Remove the end of the cable that's plugged into the computer, but don't remove the end that's plugged into the modem.

    • 3

Plug the end of the Ethernet cable that you removed into the Internet Ethernet port (it should be marked "Internet") located on the back of your wireless router.

    • 4

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable that came with your wireless router into one of your LAN Ethernet ports located on the back of your router. Plug the other end of this same cable into your computer's Ethernet port.

    • 5

Plug in your Cable/DSL modem and wait two minutes. Next, connect your power source (plug) to your wireless router and plug it in. Wait at least one minute before turning your computer on.

    • 6

Open your Internet browser and type "routerlogin.net" into the URL bar, then click "Enter." A pop-up dialog box should appear asking for a username and password. Check the manual that came with your wireless router for the specific username and password, but many times the default username is "admin" and the password is "password," both of which are in all lowercase letters.

    • 7

Click "Yes" when a pop-up screen asks you if you'd like to follow the wireless network setup wizard. This is the easiest and most efficient method for finishing the setup of your wireless network. Simply follow the onscreen instructions and enter the appropriate information (such as name, location, ISP address, etc.) when prompted. A notification should let you know that the setup has been completed and your wireless network is ready.
