The American Academy of Dermatologists states that washing your face once or twice a day with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water helps to get rid of acne. This helps to remove excess sebum, or oil, on your skin. Also, if your hair tends to get oily fast or if you have oily skin, washing your hair daily helps by making sure the oils from your head do not get on your skin.

Although acne is not caused directly by a certain food, there are some foods that can make your acne worse, advises the American Academy of Dermatologists. Stay in tune to your diet and see what makes your acne better and what makes it worse, in order to promote faster healing of your acne.

When you are trying to cover up acne, concealer and foundation can become your best friends; however, be sure to check and make sure your cosmetics are oil-free or they may actually be clogging your pores and make your acne problem worse.

Some homemade face masks also help to control infection and aid in the healing of the skin. Look for a face mask that is appropriate and compatible with your skin type.

Some common topical medications recommended by dermatologists include ones with: retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. The American Academy of Dermatologists warns that research shows emotional stress can trigger acne or even make it worse. While avoiding stress may be easier said than done since it is sometimes an everyday occurrence; as much as it is within your power, try to avoid stressful situations.
