How to Clean an XBox 360 Hard Drive Cache

The Xbox 360 system cache stores temporary files that are used by the Xbox 360 console when playing games and performing certain functions. If you experience problems when playing a specific game, you can try clearing the system cache to resolve the issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the Xbox 360 and go to the "My Xbox" tab.

    • 2

Scroll over to the right and select the "System Settings" tab.

    • 3

Select "Memory" from the system settings menu.

    • 4

Highlight any of the storage devices listed and press the "Y" button on your Xbox 360 controller (once you choose to clear the cache on a selected storage device, the cache on all installed storage devices will be cleared).

    • 5

Select the option to "Clear System Cache." This will remove all your game updates and hopefully resolve any playability issues you have been experiencing. You will be prompted to download the latest available updates for your games when you play them again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clearing the system cache will not remove your gamertag, downloaded content, or saved game files from your system.

  • If you do not see the option to "clear system cache" listed, input the button sequence "X," "X," "left bumper," "right bumper," "X," and "X" on your Xbox 360 controller. This should open a system maintenance window where you can clear the cache.
