If you have pale skin and wish to get a tan in a short amount of time, a tanning bed is one way to do it. Tanning beds are a popular way to get that sun-kissed look much faster than laying out in the sun, and they provide an even tan all over your body that can last up to a month. While tanning in a tanning bed is quick way to tan, you can also cut that time in half and still get that golden tan you desire.

    Things You'll Need

    • Exfoliating body scrub
    • Protective eye goggles
    • Tanning accelerator lotion
      • 1

Scrub your entire body the day before you're scheduled to tan, using an exfoliating body scrub in the shower to remove dead skin cells. Rinse thoroughly with water afterward.

      • 2

Apply a thin layer of tanning accelerator lotion to your entire body 20 minutes before you are scheduled to tan, making sure it's completely rubbed in. Accelerators can be purchased at salons or department stores.

      • 3

Remove all clothing, jewelry and makeup prior to tanning, to ensure an even tan.

      • 4

Put on tanning goggles to protect your eyes, and enter the tanning bed.

      • 5

Raise your arms above your head for a more even tan.

      • 6

Remain in the tanning bed for no more than five to seven minutes on the first visit so you don't burn. Add three to four minutes each additional visit until you reach the maximum 20 minutes.

      • 7

Schedule your tanning appointments for every 48 hours until you've reached your desired look.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Choose a standing tanning bed. It is usually more powerful than one you lie in, which will tan your body faster.

    • Eye wear can be purchased at the tanning salon, and some let them use theirs for free.

    • Tanning bed exposure can cause skin cancer, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
