1
Cut the power to the electrical box providing electricity to the intended fixture. Either remove the fuse from the fuse box or switch off the circuit breaker. These are in the basement or utility closet.
-
2
Remove the old or broken fixture. Each style fixture requires different removal methods, but all fixtures have some basic parts. First, remove all decorative shades or globes; then remove the light bulbs or tubes. Look for screws holding the fixture onto a covering plate, unscrewing them with a screwdriver. Keep going until you get to the mounting plate and the electrical box is in plain sight.

3
Hold the new fixture up to see if the old screw holes will work. If not, use a pencil to mark where new holes are needed. Create pilot holes, using a drill. Use bit that matches the diameter of the screws that came with the new fixture.
-
4
Strip about an inch of insulation away from the wires that hang from the ceiling or wall, using wire strippers. Do the same thing with the wires from the next fixture. Connect color to color, twisting the wires together. Seal each connection with a wire cap, which should be provided with the new light fixture. Tuck all the wires into the electrical box.
-
5
Install the fixture. While you, or an assistant, hold the fixture in place with the wires tucked neatly in the electrical box, secure whatever mounting screws come with the light fixture, using a screwdriver. Turn the power back on and test the light.
