How to Measure to Scale Using an Architectural Ruler

Architects draw plans to scale.

Architects draw their plans to scale, meaning they use a specific measurement, such as 1/2 inch, to represent a larger measurement, such as 1 foot. In order to ensure their plans are accurate, architects use specialized architectural rulers when drawing.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the scale you would like to use. Common scales are 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch to 1 foot.

    • 2

Find the number indicating the correct scale on the ruler. Architectural rulers look similar to regular rulers, except that each edge of the ruler has two scales. Each scale is marked by a number in the corner, and marks across the ruler indicate the scale measurements. For example, a ruler with scales of 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch on one edge will have those numbers in the corners. Measurements for one of these scales will be printed on top of the measurement marks along the ruler edge and measurements for the other scale will be printed underneath the marks.

    • 3

Turn the ruler so the scale you want to use is on the top of the ruler. The number identifying the scale should be in the left corner. For example, if the scale you are using is 1/4 inch, "1/4" should be on the upper left corner of the ruler.

    • 4

Place the ruler on the blueprint paper. Be careful not to turn the ruler as you place it, as this will change the scale you are using.

    • 5

Find the mark representing zero on the top of the ruler. Mark the paper at this point.

    • 6

Check that you have chosen the proper scale by noting the number at the other end of the line you want to draw. For example, if the end of the line is at the point of the ruler marked 48 feet, this tells you that your scale makes this line equivalent to 48 feet. If you do not intend your line to represent this number of feet, change the scale or make the line longer or shorter.

    • 7

Draw the line. Use the ruler edge to ensure the line is straight.
