How to Get a Tax Preparer ID

If you are a licensed tax preparer, you can apply for a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) if you do not wish to use your social security number on the returns you prepare. You can request a PTIN from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) online, by mail or via fax.

Instructions

Visit the IRS website and register to use the e-Services website (see Resources). You will have to provide personal and taxpayer data to verify your identity. This information includes your name, date of birth, social security number and your adjusted gross income from the previous year. The IRS will compare this with information from the last tax return you filed as well as information from the Social Security administration.

Wait for a response from the IRS. You will receive a confirmation code in the mail if the information you provided matches information that the IRS has in its records. Log in to the IRS database with this code within 28 days to complete the process.
